ABOUT MACKAY
The city of Mackay was settled in 1862 after the area
was first explored by Captain John Mackay searching for
pastoral country. Within ten years of settlement Mackay
was Queensland’s largest sugar producing area. The
Pioneer River was originally known as the Mackay River,
but was changed after the settlement was named Mackay.
The former Pioneer Shire Council wasestablished in 1880
but was known as the Pioneer Divisional Board until 1903
